Great screening last night of The Mad, which was premiering last night in Toronto as part of the Canadian Filmakers Festival. Directed by John Kalangis and starring Billy Zane, The Mad opened this year's festival, and it was well worth the ticket price if you ask me. Perhaps the hardcore zombie fans won't see this as the Canadian Shaun of the Dead, as it was presented last night, but to me, it did what I wanted it to do: it made me laugh. I love these zomedies, generally speaking of course, and I liked this one. Billy Zane's nerdy father role was well played and the father-and-daughter-working-out-their-relationship type of interaction was to the sound of zombie killing. I didn't ask for more, but I do have one criticism, and that is that I would have liked a bit more gore. On the topic of Billy Zane, I wonder how many people, females in particular, came to catch a glimpse of the beau garçon. Well the beau garçon didn't show up, and when Jonh Kalangis announced it, I swear I heard 100 "oh nos", "dangs" and "awws" around me. Conclusion: Next time the opening film at the Canadian Filmakers Festival stars a beau garçon, bring the dude over.

Bloodee, So cool you made it out and I'm glad you liked the film. The fun comes courtesy of the great team at Peace Arch that I was able to work with and the awesome cast. Billy did really want to make it, and it was a drag he wasn't there to get mauled by screaming fans. The film aims to be fun and you're right, a little more gore would have helped... not so much in the form of blood, but some more guts and intestines maybe... Hey guys. Hate to report that we didn't win the audience award. I was told through rumour that we lost by a hair. All the same, The Mad is going to be available everywhere and on all the broadcasts, and we're going to try and have another public screening (or more) before it comes out on DVD in June (apparently). There are so many films at the Canadian Filmmakers Festival that need to win more than us because they need the support to get out there. I know directly because I've been there. Best to all the winners and thanks to you guys for giving us a huge house. The film was sold out (and wildly oversold) at the beginning of the day so they moved up to the biggest screen in the Varsity and we sold another 100 tickets or so from what I understand, so THANKS!!!! Will be badk often, just surfing to see what I should be watching, and checking in to chat. johnny
