The New Orleans Ax murderer
|
In the early part of the 20th century a murderer roamed the streets of New Orleans. The weapons of choice were an ax and a straight-razor.
In the early hours of May 22, 1918 Jake Maggio was awakened by the sounds of some loud noises and groans coming from the adjoining apt. of their brother, Joseph, and his wife, Cathrine. Jake banged on the wall of his bedroom and gave a holler to his brother, as was their usual custom, when one needed the other. Jake got no answer. He banged again, and still, no answer. He roused his brother Andrew with some difficulty as Andrew had been drinking earlier that night and was a bit inebriated. They decided to venture into their brother's home to see what, if anything, was the matter. A few feet inside they found evidence of a break-in and became highly alarmed and ran to check on their brother and his wife. A gruesome sight met their eyes. Their brother and his wife were lying sprawled on their bed in pools of blood. Cathrine had been struck in the head with an ax and then her throat slashed so severely that her head was nearly decapitated. Joseph was still barely alive and had been struck several times with an ax in the head, and also slashed with a straight razor. Jake and Andrew called the police and for an ambulance, but Joseph died before they arrived.
The next attack came two weeks later. The next victims were a Louis Besumer and his mistress Anna Harriet. Besumer managed to survive the attack, but could not give a description of the attacker. Anna was not so lucky. The attacker was particularly vicious with her...dealing a blow so sever to her head that it nearly split it.
The next victim came 2 months later. The pregnant wife of Edward Schnieder was attacked in their bedroom on August 5.
Miraculously, Mrs. Schnieder survived, and the unborn child was unharmed. She could remember no details of the attack.
A week later she gave birth to a healthy daughter.
There were several murders and attempted murders over the course of many months, and then abruptly, the murders ceased. No one knows why they stopped. The murderer was never caught.
