Did we really need a new American remake of an excellent Korean horror movie made less than 5 years ago? Probably not, however, fortunately for us, The Uninvited can be listed alongside The Ring in the category of good American remakes of Asian horror movies. Without sticking too closely to A Tale of Two Sisters (Janghwa, Hongryeon), written and directed by Kim Jee-woon, the filmakers behind The Uninvited follow its general concept, while simplifying the plot and adding some well-constructed scenaristic elements.

Following the death of their mother and the fire that destroyed part of the house of her house, Anna is hospitalized for a couple of months. When released, she goes back to live with her father and elder sister, Alex, but unfortunately for her, there is a newcomer in her New England house: Rachel, the nurse who took care of her mother and is now Steven's (Anna's father) girlfriend. Anna and Alex start suspecting that Rachel is in fact a serial killer gunning for their father's wealth. Convinced that she is the cause of her mother's death, Anna is haunted by the ghosts of three children who try to warn her and guide her through various revelations and surprises.

The Uninvited is part of the recent wave of "softcore" horror movies, defined as PG-13 horror movies, i.e., a horror movie that can be seen by almost anyone. With such a handicap and the lack of consideration (often legitimate) that horror fans have for remakes, this movie seemed destined to receive more bricks than flowers. However, the result is incredibly satisfying. The plot of A Tale of Two Sisters was supported entirely by the eeriness of the atmosphere, which created a true tension and ambiance of fear; but the makers of this remake rethought the script and adapted it to the standards of an american production, rather that trying to follow the postulate and narrative techniques of a Korean production. Just like The Ring was, The Uninvited is occidentalized, and that's where its strength lies.

That said, The Uninvited is by no means superior to A Tale of 2 Sisters, but I applaude the Guard Brothers for creating a remake that works. While not as complex as the original, The Uninvited remains surprising. Its gradual increase of suspense explodes in a final twist that is quite obviously foreseeable, but also convincing and efficient, in comparison to other twists that just don't make any sense (SAW V, anyone?).

Cinematographically speaking, the movie impresses thanks to the quality of its photography and actors are convincing, with Elizabeth Banks coming out as the best of the lot. After getting us used to light roles (Zack And Miri Make A Porno), she is unrecognizable in the role of Rachel, the manipulative stepmother.

So...

I give this one 4 rusty pipes out of 5.

DIRECTED BY: Charles Guard and Thomas Guard

SCRIPT: Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro and Craig Rosenberg

WITH: Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, Elizabeth Banks, David Strathairn and Maya Massar

 » original news

Lets make this quick: Splinter is a diamond in a sea of sheizen!

Seth and Polly are on a trip to celebrate their anniversary outdoors. When their tent breaks, they head back on the road to search for a motel. Long story short, they are taken hostages by a convict and his girlfriend, and head together to a gas station where they are attacked by a mysterious creature who takes control of human and animal bodies and transforms them.

Splinter is a monster movie that is not unique, but rare, i.e., an amusing movie that is entertaining and original. Director Toby Wilkins (The Grudge 3) understands what make a great monster flick and emphasizes it. In most monster films in which a creature takes hold of a body, the monster adapts to the body; Splinter works the other way around: bodies are adapted to the monster.

Also, character development is slow, but characters are far from clichés. Instead of using the same old stereotypes, protagonists are "human", with their strengths and weaknesses. Everything is credible.

In short: Watch! This! Movie!
 » original news

Both your beretta and your minigun have infinite ammo. As far as storyline goes, you don't really need a Bulwark 53 walktrough, the whole game is pretty straightforward: Find cards to unlock the HQ doors and visit the Armory for more ammo. The first card is the longest to find. Just go toward the bottom, then the right until it goes back up. It will at the end of the path. One thing: this game becomes veryyyyyyy slow at some point. Luckily, there is a cheat: type IOP on your keyboard.
 » original news

Yet another exemple of the use of horror in advertising, this one with a Quarantine-themed game presented by Blu-Ray: take your mates' pictures from Facebook and snipe them as they try to escape the building. If you haven't seen Quarantine that probably won't say much to you, but think rage plague à la 28 Days Later on a Blair Witch badtrip. Thats what this movie makes me think of and it was loads of fun, minus the screaming-hysterically-at-the-worst-possible-time main character. Sony Entertainment released a Quarantine FPS escape horror game on their website back when the movie was released a few months back, In it, the character was inside the house, trying to escape. In this one, the character is outside the house. Sniping. And your Facebook friends are the infected. Like the game says: Who needs enemies when theres friends like you?
 » original news

With Last House on the Left set to hit theaters on Friday March 13, it is time to salute one of the most prolific horror icons of the 20th century, and now the 21st century: Wes Craven, daddy of some great horror classics, such as The Last House on the Left (remake in 2009), The Hills have Eyes (remake in 2006) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (remake in 2010).

With so many remakes of his earlier works (go Freddy, go), its hard not to refer to this as something like a legacy. And as the marketing for The Last House on the Left sets itself in motion, there is a new site dedicated precisely to that: Wes Craven's legacy (link).

So what does the man has to say about it? Referring specifically to The Last House on the Left, he said in an interview to Variety : "I'm far enough removed from these films that the remakes are a little like having grandchildren. The story, about the painful side effects of revenge, is an evergreen. The headlines are full of people and nations taking revenge and getting caught up in endless cycles of violence." Grandchildren. Ok. But, honestly The Hills have Eyes remake was awesome and bloodilicious, and there is no reason to expect less from the Last House on the Left remake, which will star Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, and Sara Paxton. So, c'mon, I am waiting. Impatiently. And for those of you who are like me, here are a few pics to wet your bloody buds.

 » original news

On February 3rd, Studio 407 announced that they had acquired Ben Fisher and Michael Henderson’s Smuggling Spirits for publication. After it was announced last year that Ambrosia Publishing would be shutting down, Studio 407 jumped at the chance to have Smuggling Spirits be apart of their expanding catalog. Last month Studio 407 also finalized a deal with Argentina's Altercomics that will bring their most popular titles to North America.

Studio 407's managing director Alex Leung says "We thought Smuggling Spirits was an incredible book that went under the radar, and did not get the exposure it deserved when it was first released in single volumes. I think both Ben and Michael are incredible talents to watch for and their skills have meshed perfectly to produce an incredibly unique storytelling experience. We feel extremely fortunate to be involved with this book."

Smuggling Spirits is described as: Set in a nightmarish vision of the past where deadly monstrosities called “darklings” roam the shadows of Prohibition-Era America, Al Stone is a bootlegger who finds himself on the run when he inadvertently stumbles upon the bloody secret of the creatures’ survival. As the beasts close in to take back what’s theirs, Al and his young ward, Nathan, must make their final stand. Smuggling Spirits is a pulse pounding, thrill ride that blends the action noir of Sin City with the horror and suspense of Hellboy. Read what Rue Morgue calls “a shot of white lightning."

Follow the link to a preview of Smuggling Spirits.
 » original news

Word is Eden Lake will be released on DVD January 6. Good, just in time for me to ask it again to zombie santa. Set in a bucolic environment, Eden Lake was nothing new, reminded me of Them in some aspects, but it was an extremely well done and efficient bloody tale of kids gone bad... with murderous consequences. Fuelled by the the rage of it's gang leader, an aggressive group of local kids terrorize the couple played by Kelly Reilly (L'Auberge Espagnole) and Michael Fassbender in unimaginable ways, and their weekend outing becomes a bloody battle for survival. Eden Lake is a brutal cat-and-mouse game, a well-acted movie that stays with you. The disturbingly cold gang leader, portrayed by Jack O'Connel, is the most important character in this movie, a reminder that children can also be cold-hearted killers. And that's the first element of a great movie - and art in general: it does not leave things as is, and shatters our innocence sort of speak. That is precisely what Eden Lake does, and for that, it gets a 9/10 from me.

Here are some pics for you.

 » original news

Honestly, is there any reason to ask for anything else this Christmas than a bit more stability and money for all of us? And that is what I am wishing the most. No more of this 1929-look alike

2- Horror DVDs.

A classic gift idea, but I am not greedy. I do not require limited or special editions nor pristine autographed covers. Just good horror movies that allow one to stray from his everyday paradigms. In other words : entertainment, the bloody kind. And what should I get? Well, to tell you the truth, because I was a translator for the Beijing Olympics from February to August, I didn’t get to watch that many horror flicks this year, so… all of them...

Ok... Not quite realistic… Between the annoyance that was the insipid Saw 5 (seriously, Saw franchise, Saw 1 to 4 went from good to mildly interesting, that was just awful – is anyone seriously calling that a twist) and the lot of horror movies that were really just breasts pictorials (a.k.a Zombie Strippers, Blood and Sex Nightmare), what was there?

Some scary movies came through for us shameless bloodhounds : The Signal (original, funny, great), Feast 2 : Sloppy Seconds (funny, better than the first), Let the Right One In (intelligent, slow-paced, great vampire movie, but not for everyone), Funny Games U.S. (not as memorable as the original one, but still stays with you), The Strangers (leaves a temporary sense of discomfort if someone happens to knock on your door when the credits start, and one of the rare horror films I saw that made people scream in the theatre), Eden Lake (nothing new, but damn efficient, and I have liked Kelly Reilly since L’Auberge Espagnole), Dead Set (you want zombies and blood, here are some zombies and blood).

So the question is : what should I get? All these are great, and are on my list. And so is Pulse 3…

Yes.

You read correctly.

Pulse 3.

While I will never waiver in my disapointment Pulse 1, the flafla American remake of the great Japanese horror Kairo, Pulse 2 redeemed the trilogy in my eyes. With characters that didn’t make me want to barf, a protagonist that wasn’t on PMS, actors that did not get on my nerves generally speaking, and an ending that wasn't too sloppy, I enjoyed this second instalment. Maybe it was the absence of Kristen Bell. Or maybe it was the change in the directing chair. Let’s see. Some guy named Jim Sorenzo directed Pulse 1. Joel Soisson, not some guy, wrote and directed Pulse 2 : The Afterlife and Pulse 3. Soisson may not be the greatest director around, but I like some of his movies, including the first three Prophecy movies, and his work on Pulse 2 made me want to see more, ie see Pulse 3. Call me curious. I think there is hope.

And if there is hope for Pulse, there might be some hope for that economy thing too. Just ask Zombie Santa

 » original news
