As suggested by the Cloverfield trailer, Cloverfield is a kind of Godzilla movie with a Blair Witch twist.
Before leaving for Japan to work, Rob wants to party with his friends one last time. Hud, his best friend, is responsible for filming the event. In the course of the evening, Manhattan is attacked by a giant creature. And what a creature it is. Buildings crumble, New Yorkers run in a panic – there is a 9/11 feeling about the whole thing. The monster's apparition is an historic event, and Hud’s mission becomes to document the tragic events.
I am not a monster movie fan to start with... but director Matt Reeves (Future Shock) vision is enticing. This giant monster movie is in no way similar to the Godzilla remake we saw a few years ago.
Telling the story from the point of view of the camera creates a sense of realism… and terror... The decapitated Statue of Liberty on the Cloverfied poster created an eerie atmosphere, and the film, imo, lives up to the hype.
