Yesterday, I didn't feel like waiting for the masses to pour out of the offices, so I headed up to the Varsity Cinema in Toronto for an early showing of Grindhouse. Well, this was one of the most amazing movies I ever saw, it was Grindhouse à la 21st Century, an extraordinary mix of gore and beautiful ladies. The show started with the faux-trailers Hobo with a Shotgun and Machete starring Danny Trejo, before moving into the essentials.
First up: Robert Rodriguez's PLANET TERROR, an action-packed gorrific zombie movie starring Rose McGowan as Cherry, the gun-legged gogo dancer. I said once that this character could potentially win my YP prize for best character in a movie ever and after seeing the Grindhouse flick, it is definitely in my top ten. PLANET TERROR literally splatters you and I went into the theatre expecting to prefer it over Quentin Tarantino's segment, DEATH PROOF... because of the gore... and the zombies...
Second up: The three trailers between PLANET TERROR and DEATH PROOF are amazing. After hearing so much about these trailers for such a long time, it was extremely satisfying to finally see WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS (Rob Zombie), DON'T (Edgar Wright) and THANKSGIVING (Eli Roth) in all of their perverted glory - and I mean that as a compliment. THANKSGIVING in particular is one twisted faux-trailer, and it was actually censored for that knife-under-trampoline-meets-****- part. Again, "Ouch".
Going back to the main features, DEATH PROOF had some talky moments, in the Quentin Tarantino fashion, and that is something I personally like. But the main attraction of the feature was the action-packed car chases (did anyone else think 'Moby Dick reference' when seeing that white car ram into Stuntman Mike's car) and how the flick essentially shifts from a slasher-type setup to action to revenge. In other words, it keeps you entertained until the funny end. While I went into the movie expecting to prefer PLANET TERROR, DEATH PROOF wins my vote. Its action and setup switches really got me going. And listen, I was never a fan of Kurt Russell. Period. But in this movie, he gives such a tremendous performance as Stuntman Mike that I have to say "kudoz, looking forward to your next performance".
Favorite Faux-Trailer: Hobo with a Shotgun. Favorite Feature: Death Proof.
