Chapter 1: The Emergence
It was early, about 4:35 AM on a Sunday morning. It was December 8, the temperature was 22 degrees, and the snow was coming down hard. It was the 2nd day of heavy snowfall. So far, we had about 11 inches on the ground and the weatherman said we would have a total of about 16 inches before it was to end. I was sitting in my tree stand on the bank of the Iroquois river waiting for a nice size buck to come out of the woods to drink from the cold river. The river had not froze as of yet. A light mist was still coming up from the water due to the water still being warmer than the air temperature. I could feel the hair in my nose freeze every time I inhaled the cold air. I had set up my tree stand yesterday and arrived at 2:45 am this morning in hopes of bringing down a big buck. The sun was just beginning to come up and the odd thing was I did not hear not one bird or the scurrying of any small game. This was very strange because I have been on the river many times in the early morning and the trees and woods were very much alive with the sound of all kind of wild life. The snow was coming down so heavy now I could not see the other side of the river. I could only make out the dark shape of the steep riverbank directly across from me on the other side. All of a sudden, I heard the sound of tree branches and the dried out vegetation snapping and rusting crazily on the other side as if something was moving fast toward me. Then all was quite again. I thought to myself what the fuck was that? I could not see anything over there, not even the dark shadow of the riverbank. I then looked thru my riflescope and could just see the blurry dark riverbank on the other side. Then all hell broke loose over there, something moving fast thru the thickets of under brush and the most horrifying growl mixed with an almost human yell. It was so terrifying I put my finger on the trigger. I was still looking thru the scope and the heat of my face started to steam up the lens and at that very moment something big and dark looking like the size of a cow moved down the bank and behind it was something two times bigger with about eight arms, or maybe even tentacles chasing it. The first of the two animals hit the water with such force that the water splashed up about 15 feet in the air. Then the second animal grabbed the first with three appendages, ripped it up out of the water, and snapped it in half. At this point, I started shooting and the two dark objects moved back up the riverbank but this time the giant one was grabbing the limbs of the trees like some type of ape and swinging back up to the top of the bank with the other still in its clutches. I was so scared I grabbed my rifle, ran to my truck, and sped away as fast as I could.
By the time, I arrived back to town three police cars were heading out of town at a high rate of speed with lights and sirens blaring. I went to the police station to report what I had seen and as I started to run up the stairs, eight more officers were running down the stairs right toward me. I tried to stop them to tell them what I had seen but one where of the officers said “we have an emergency down at the river”. I told him I was just at the river hunting and seen the strangest thing I have ever seen and it was not human. The officer yelled back “come with me”. I jumped into the squad car with the officer and we headed out of town. The officer asked me what I had seen and I told him my story as we were flying down old cemetery road. The officer told me that a mine worker had came to the station 15 minutes before I had arrived and the pour guy was missing a arm and said 6 others working in the mine with him were dead, torn to pieces. He said he worked the night shift for Ronco Mining and they were drilling in shaft 17 and they hit a tunnel which when they put on the portable lights that the walls where white and covered with strange hieroglyphics and strange carvings of some monstrous looking creatures with tentacles and somewhat dog type jaws and massive half hairy & half scales all over their bodies. In addition, the next thing you know they were attacked. It also squirted a type of slime from two holes in its head where the nose would be that would paralyze its victim. Then it would pull the victim apart and some how suck the skeleton out and leave the rest in a pile.
As we came around the bend just past the cemetery, we watched five police cursers up ahead pulling into to front entrance of the mine. The sun was now up and made the day a grey looking day. Visibility was good, as the snow had tapered to flurries. We had got out of the curser guns drawn and all was quite, and I mean it was an eerie calm. As we approached the mine there was an odd odor being emitted from the mine. The odor was like marshmallows being roasted on an open fire. The closer we got to the entrance we noticed a fog that was rolling out the mine entrance along the ground and about two feet high and the odor was now so strong it became nauctious. As we entered the mine the first officer tripped over something that was hidden in the fog. As he used his hands to push himself back up he had blood all over his uniform shirt, face, and pants. He started to vomit while he shook his hands vigorously to get the blood off him. We could not actually see what he fell into but we all figured it has probably one of the dead miners. Another officer picked up a big stick and started to fish around in the fog and the stick pushed up against something that was very soft and heavy. As he prodded, he pulled up a human leg that was devoid of bone that just hung off the end of the stick. The officer in charge told one of his men to return to his curser and call the state police for back up. As that officer started to turn away, he was pulled into the fog screaming as four large tentacles came up, wrapped around his limbs, and pulled him apart. The other officers started firing into the fog in front of the downed officer as three more tentacles broke thru the dirt wall to his right. Two more officers went down into the fog and the first officer was what looked like spit up and hit the ceiling with a splat and then fell back to the floor and hidden by the fog. At this time, the others and I ran back to the police cursers firing at what ever was in the walls and fog on the floor. Then all of a sudden, another officer was blown out of the entrance and landed just past the fog at the mouth of the entrance. It looked as if the body was deflated and missing the head. Four officers were shooting wildly into the mine and at the fog. Bullets where bouncing and dirt was flying in little puffs as they hit the outside of the mine. Me and the officer I came with were making our way to the police curser as fast as or feet would fly when we heard the blood curdling sound from something not human or animal. All of a sudden, the whole entrance burst outward and a massive creature of unknown species came crashing thru with tentacles flailing in all directions. We were just entering the curser and two more officers were snatched up off the ground and thrown so hard into one of the police cursers that they splashed like tomatos from three stories up onto a concrete pad. We hauled ass away from the scene and left a cloud of dust behind us. About a mile and a half from the mine we hit the route one black top and the officer was on the radio calling into the dispatcher and stated that all the other officers had been killed and we needed much more backup and we where headed back to town.
When we arrived back to town, two state police cursers were just arriving at the station. As we pulled up to the station the state police ran to our police curser as we dismounted and noticed that blood was sprayed all over the back end of the car. They were asking franticly “what happened”. As we all filed into the police station, you could smell the scent of freshly brewed coffee. The station was as busy as a bee’s hive with the city, county and state police. In addition, I had noticed in the chief of police office was three men one in military uniform and two in black suites. A state police officer whom was a friend of the officer I was with had told us that these creatures were coming up from the caves, river bottoms, sewers and other mineshafts n the area. It sounded to me as if we where under some type of invasion from below. I had explained to the officer that I had to go home to make sure my family was safe.
As I had left the police station I could see military attack helicopters above the town flying very low, there had to be about 10 that were airborne. As I had been driving to the house, I noticed a military convoy headed toward me. There was jeeps, and trucks (filled with troops), tanks being hauled on flat bed trucks, rocket launcher type trucks, communication trucks, military ambulances, and strange looking trucks hauling artillery. People where coming out of there business’s and there homes to see what was going on. Some people started running in panic down the streets. I had only lived about five blocks down the street from the police station on the main drag thru town. As I pulled into the drive way my wife and daughter where coming out the front door onto the front porch. My wife was carrying a shotgun and my daughter was clutching her favorite doll. Just before the front door closed the family dog had came racing out onto the porch barking. We all met at the top of the stairs to the porch. The smell of diesel hung thick in the air. All of the military convoy headed over to a large field at the west end of town where they all parked in perfect rows facing the river. My wife said they were waken up by the dog barking wildly at some thing that was trying to tear thru the roof. That is when she said she had grabbed the shotgun and went out side to see what the dog was carring on about. In addition, she said she heard the strangest sound, kinda like a screaming growl that was coming from where the roof was being torn up. She said she seen this beast with wings fury and scaly, and arms with claws, and tentacles. The most hideous head I have ever seen. She said it scared her so badly she did not even take a shot at it she unhooked the dog and they both ran back in the back door.
Chapter 2: Ice Fishing
Ted Von Echberg was the mayor of Iroquois Falls and was out ice fishing on the river in the early morning of December 8th. He was sitting in his little homemade icehouse fishing with his best friend Jimmy Donaldson and Jimmy’s son, 12-year-old Jim Jr.
Ted and Jimmy knew each other since they where in 2nd grade. Jimmy was the towns’ chief of police for the last 12 years and he had known everyone in town as did Mayor Von Echberg. Jimmy had just retired two months ago as police chief. The three of them always fished together, and it was always the same area that they fished. You could bet that you would find them south of old fiddler’s bridge. They swore that the biggest fish where always around that south end of the bridge, between fiddlers and the old gravel river crossing. Many years ago traders came across the old gravel trail to trade goods back when the town was a trading post. During the summer tourist would be found all around the area, looking for old arrowheads and Indian artifacts. Well today, it was so cold and there luck fishing was not very good. They only had caught one walleye and little Jim Jr was being a little brat because he did not catch any fish and he was board. It was still dark enough that they had the lanterns on and a little propane heater going to keep them warm. However, it was so dam cold the heater was barely keeping them warm. They had only been out on the river for about two hours and with luck like it was, they had decided it was time to reel in there lines and call it quits. Then all of a sudden, Big Jims line jerked and started to unravel so fast off the reel that steam was raising into the air. Needless to say big smiles grew on all three of there faces. They always used 150-pound test line because the river contained flat head catfish weight in at up to 250 pounds. Jimmy was hanging on to that pole with all he had in him. In addition, he told the mayor to grab him by the back of his coat and hang on because his feet were sliding on the ice right for that hole in the ice. Jimmy could not even reel in any line and he was about to come to the end of the spool. At that moment, they heard a crash thru the ice further down the river, and Ted said, NO WAY! Little Jim opened the door to the icehouse and they all three froze with fear at the sight they saw. Jimmy could see the line was attached to the wing of this monstrosity as it flew up out of the ice about thirty feet above the river it had a wing span of about twenty feet. The ice was about three feet thick and they realized this thing must have had amazing strength. Jimmy let go of the fishing rod and both men fell backwards onto the ice. Jim Jr frozen with fear could not move and the door to the icehouse was open about two inches. As Jimmy hit the ice, his foot had kicked the door shut. He than got back on his feet and went back to the door opened it just enough to peer out at the creature. The creature came back down about twenty feet toward the icy river. The fresh snow on the frozen river was moving upward in swirls as the creature was flapping its wings. The creature them slammed back downward into the ice where it had risen out of and Jimmy shut the door of the hut turned back just in time to see Mayor Von Echburg just getting back up off the icy floor of the hut. The line on the reel was still unwinding, and then all of a sudden the pole snapped in two. They then grabbed Jim Jr and opened the door and seen nothing so they started to run toward the shoreline. As soon as they got to the shoreline the ice hut had burst up into the air, debris was flying everywhere. The three of them started to run up the bank, they heard the flapping wings behind them. The trees on the bank were so dense that the beast could not see them slipping and sliding in a panic to get to the top where there truck was parked. The three of them made it up the bank, ran to the mayor’s truck, got in, and just sat there. The mayor did not want to start the engine because he did not want the creature to hear them. Jim Jr did not move in the rear seat of the truck, he was lying down scrunched up against the driver side door shaking. The two men watched as the the creature had started to fly toward the north above the river looking down like a hawk looking for its prey. Soon it was out of site and Jimmy said lets get the hell out of here it is gone. The mayor started the engine and started moving the truck slowly south down the snow-covered road. Jimmy then pulled out a flask of his favorite homemade brew, took a long chug, and passed it toward the mayor who just shook his head no.
The road was only a dirt road in the summer and with snow covering it now, the only path to follow was there tracks they made on the way in and they where now covered with two inches of fresh snow. Jim Jr finally sat up in the back seat but was still not talking. They came to the black top road fifteen minutes after they were into there trip and Ted hit the gas once on the black top. It was freshly plowed and salted but still slick. Once they where back in town they headed over to the mayors office were the mayor had a two way radio directly tied in with the local police department. They where pretty shook up and Jim Jr seemed to still be in a state of shock. Ted fumbled the keys and they fell to the ground and disappeared in the fresh snow he started digging thru the snow with his bare hands he finally found them and unlocked the back door and rushed inside the warm office. Jimmy got on the phone right away to the hospital for Jim Jr and Ted on the radio to contact the police dispatcher for help. Wanda the dispatcher was on duty and dispatched a squad car immediately to the mayor’s office. Five minutes later the police car slid into to city halls parking lot and rolled up to the back door. About two minutes later the ambulance Jimmy called had arrived. Jim Jr was lying on the couch in the mayors office covered with a knitted quilt made by the mayor’s wife. Ted and Jimmy where telling the two police officers what had happened when try heard a call come over the radio about a crazed miner who just ran into the police station missing one arm stating his buddies were dead at mineshaft 17.
Chapter 3: The Tunnel
Professor John T. McMurphy was just about to get out of bed and smelled the sweet smell of hazelnut coffee and bacon in the air. John was the local anthropologist slash paleontologist and taught at Iroquois fall college. Jean, John’s wife had always been up way before John had gotten out of bed in the morning and she was a great cook. He leaned over to the nightstand next to his side of his bed and turned on the radio to the local radio station W.G.F.I. they played country and soft music. He crawled out of bed and headed to the bathroom for his morning constitutional listening to Guy Maning the morning announcer when he heard the front door bell ring. John and Jean lived in an old gothic two-story mansion that was in his family for over 150 years. They kept good care of the place and all the surrounding 12 acers, that had a 2-acre pond out front and a long front driveway that went in a circle in front of the main entrance of the house. The front yard was full of old oak trees that looked very Erie this time of year devoid of leaves. John could hear Jean coming up the stairs in a bit of a hurry calling out his name. John thought to himself that this was sort of odd at this time of the morning. Then Jean entered the bedroom and said John, Billy Joe Hopkins is here and said he needs to speak to you that it was urgent. John just put on his housecoat and slippers and started down the stairs. As he descended the stairs, he could hear the sound of a man talking to Billy Joe. As he got down to the first floor he could he Billy (who was the new chief of police) was not alone but had a gentleman with him that was dressed in a military uniform. John had spent 12 years in the army special ops division and noticed the man’s shoulder lapels had two silver stars on them. He was a major general. Jean was following John and asked the men if they wanted some coffee. Billy said, oh of course Mrs. McMurphy I think you make the best coffee in town. She glanced over to the general and he said no thank you mam. John, then asked Billy, what is this all about Billy. I think I will let the general explain, said Billy. The general whose name was General Davis was seated and stood up, he was a large man about six foot six and built like a brick shit house. He had a very serious look on his face and started telling John about the strange occurrences that had happened this morning at the mine. Then he went into the story of what happened down at the river. Then he said, John I need your expertise opinion about a tunnel that was found two miles east of the number 17 mineshaft at the old Indian burial grounds that just seemed to appear out of nowhere today. He stated that there were some unusual bones found there along with some strange writings and pitchers on the walls of this tunnel. The tunnel was made in a round shape thru the bedrock. They had never seen anything like this before and wanted John to come and look and see if he could make heads or tails out of just what it was and what he could make out of the bones and drawings. John said, well Jean can I get some breakfast for three to go? Oh, well of course, Jean said. Billy and the general started to decline breakfast and John interrupted them and said, general it is better than any chow you ever had in any mess hall and I cannot eat in front of you guys if you are not going to join me. So, they both agreed to have breakfast only if they could have it on the fly do to the urgency of the situation. Jean had packed up there individual meals in disposable plastic ware and the men stepped out side and John noticed two more solders outside waiting by a military hummer. The general asked Billy to let sergeant Peterson drive his squad car back to the police station for him and the three of them would take the hummer to the site where the tunnel was located.
